Technical background
The Webtracer is an online tool which helps to determine identities on the internet. The Webtracer will help you discover the owner of a website, the location of a server, the sender of an e-mail etc. It's primary purpose is to assist in online forensic research. Examples where the Webtracer is successfully used:
- trace the hosting provider and owner of a website with illegal content
- find the sender of a malicious e-mail
- look for relations between websites, e-mail addresses, etc.
- background research on a person, a company or an online service.
The Webtracer uses publicly available internet protocols and databases to discover relationships between resources. Resources include internet domain names, website addresses (URL's), host names (server names), e-mail addresses and IP addresses. The relationships are searched recursively in a search tree. Each time a resource is clicked in the tree, related resources will be searched using the available protocols and databases. You can traverse the tree is deep as needed. The goal is to come across a resource which leads to the required information (such as the identity of a person or company).
